In a world where ancient forces of light and darkness clash, Will, a sixteen-year-old boy who works in a dock, discovers a hidden legacy within himself. Faced with imminent danger and the loss of his mother, he’s thrust into a battle against the looming threat of the Dark King’s return. As London teeters on the brink of chaos, Will is recruited by the Stewards to join the fight for the fate of their world. Amidst a resurgence of long-forgotten conflicts, heroes and former adversaries unite in a struggle to preserve their existence. Will’s journey becomes a quest to embrace the light within himself and protect everything he holds dear from impending doom.

There is no way to explain how much I enjoyed this book. I’m pretty familiar with Pacat’s work. This is the first time she enrolls into fantasy and regardless of what others may say, I think she nailed it.

For those who enjoy gripping reads that keep you on the edge on each page or chapter, this is your book. Also because of the story, you’ll find yourself guessing who may be or not the “bad” one, the antagonist… until the very last frigging page, LOL.

There will be more characters trough the story but Will is the main. Will’s character development is masterfully crafted, it is amazing how Pacat excels to portray Will’s growth as a character. It’s not easy at all, but I believe the situations our friends face throughout the story naturally push their development and maturity, if you want to call it that. It’s complicated for a young person to have to make decisions quickly and under enormous pressure, decisions that, as we will see, will have serious consequences not only for him but also for the world they’re trying to save.

Book’s plot piqued my interest instantly, you’ll read mostly of magic, villains, power, torture, death, resurrection, war, planning. What captivates me about this realm is its magic, not solely reliant on innate abilities but also on ancient artifacts. The meticulous world-building immerses you in every aspect of this universe, igniting a desire to explore alongside Will. While the pacing may seem slower compared to other books by the author, it steadily gains momentum, compelling you to eagerly flip through each page.

Among the various perspectives woven into the narrative, we will find Violet’s, Imagine meeting her in the most unusual and unexpected way to later find that she’s the only one you can trust, and who’s later journey unveils a profound awakening to her circumstances, an immense power. Other character viewpoints enrich the story, particularly offering insights into the enigmatic Dark King. Each perspective contributes uniquely to the unfolding events, yet not every character adheres strictly to their prescribed role in the unfolding drama. We will lose some, a few beloved ones. Traitors will emerge.

C’mon, I bet you have to be somehow interested, give it a go, promise you’ll like it.

In addition there is LOVE, homosexual love, how cool, isn’t it? Although it’s not the main issue for the plot. The scenes are justified, not merely created for the sake of it. There’s a background to them, not just for the reader’s enjoyment. And you know what else? The ending… oh dear lord.
